What is Oligoscan?

The Oligoscan uses spectrophotometry to measure the levels of vitamins, minerals, and heavy metals in your tissues. By analyzing the optical density of your skin, this technology provides instant, accurate readings without the need for blood samples or invasive procedures.

  • Quick and Non-invasive: No needles or blood draws required. You’ll receive results in just minutes, making this a convenient option for a comprehensive health evaluation.
  • Real-time Results: Get immediate insights into your mineral levels and toxic metal exposure so you can take action promptly.

Why Choose Oligoscan?

At Sparrow Clinic, we use the Oligoscan to help identify potential imbalances or toxicities that could be impacting your health. This scan is often sought out by individuals looking to optimize their wellness, improve energy levels, or better understand the role of vitamin & minerals in their health.

What to Expect During Your Oligoscan Appointment

The Oligoscan procedure is quick and easy:

  1. A non-invasive, painless scan is conducted by placing the Oligoscan device against the skin of your hand.
  2. The scan measures the concentration of vitamins, minerals and heavy metals present in the tissues in just a few minutes.
  3. Once the scan is complete, your results are available instantly. Our wellness team will walk you through the data based on your unique profile. While not required, it is highly recommended to have this done in conjunction with a family practice appointment for more thorough and customized review and recommendations with a medical provider.

If you do not know your blood type, we will have to perform an instant test first (an additional fee of $25) in order to be able to perform the Oligoscan.

How Do Oligoscan Results Compare to Other Laboratory Tests?

The results from Oligoscan provide a unique perspective on your body's mineral levels and heavy metal toxicity because they measure intracellularly—directly from your tissues. This differs from traditional blood, urine, and hair tests, which each offer a limited view of your body’s metal or mineral status.

  • Blood Tests: Blood tests typically show recently circulated metals, which may only be relevant in acute situations. After just a few days, metals move out of the bloodstream and into tissues, where they may remain undetected by blood tests. While blood levels of minerals and trace elements can remain stable, they don’t always reflect deficiencies at the cellular level. For instance, individuals experiencing muscle cramps may have normal magnesium levels in a blood test, but the Oligoscan can reveal an intracellular magnesium deficiency.
  • Urine Tests: Standard urine tests show the excreted metals your body is eliminating. Typically, only very small amounts of metals or toxins are naturally excreted. A provocation or challenge test may be used to increase excretion levels to detect metal concentrations, but these tests measure metals present outside the cells. The Oligoscan, by contrast, provides insight into intracellular metal levels, offering a complementary view to what might be found with provoked urine tests.
  • Hair Analysis: Hair analysis reflects metal exposure over the past few months, but it doesn’t always indicate the current activity within your body. In cases where the body’s detox pathways are impaired, a low level of metals may be reflected in the hair, leading to a false-negative result, even though metals may still be present in your tissues. The Oligoscan, however, shows what is actively happening within your cells right now.

Additionally, traditional lab tests such as hair, urine, or blood samples can take several days to weeks to process. Oligoscan, on the other hand, provides you with immediate, real-time results, allowing you to take swift, informed steps toward improving your health and wellness.
